My brief for
year 13 was to create a music video. I could choose any song I wanted but had
to change the narrative (which is what happens in the music video). As a group
there were various songs we looked at that we could have gone with but in the
end after the research we conducted e.g. surveys and questionnaires we decided
to base our music video on the song Sun Don’t Shine by Klangarussell. The music
genre for this song is dance. We decided to go with the genre dance because we
found out after conducting our survey that dance was the most popular genre
that the general public like to listen too. Overall we surveyed 40 people.
My group consists of myself Rhiannon
Andrews-West, Max Heath and Luke Thompson. My role within the group was the
boyfriend in the video who loses his girlfriend to a car accident. I play a
very much in love character when I am with the girl character (Rhiannon) e.g.
when we go out for a meal and to the pub and looking over the fantastic views
of London then my character suddenly changes when I lose her I play a very sad
and shattered character whose heart feels like it has been broken because he
wanted to and thought he was going to spend the rest of his life with her. I
act as though I blame myself for the crash because we had just had an argument
and when I txt her she looks down and loses concentration which causes the
accident. What I learnt from the role I played was that I am versatile as I
changed from one character to the next and I believe this shows the qualities I
brought to the group. When the other boys didn’t want
to step up and be a character I did and so did Rhiannon this shows hard work
and commitment from the both of us. The other role I had within the group was
to create the storyboards. The storyboards were how we as a group planned out
how the film would go and what scene went where. I created the storyboards and
uploaded them to blogger so that my group could see them as well. I also shared
the editing of the film with Rhiannon and max because we all have relatively
good skills on Final cut pro and know how to edit and crop each scene
accordingly to what we thought was best.
I
believe my group did work well together but not as well as it could have due to the lack of commitment
from some members. As a group I do believe each member did bring something to
the group. Luke was the person that came up with the ideas and places to go and
what scenes needed to be created. Max was the cameraman and helped out with a
bit of editing and Rhiannon and myself were the main characters and both took
turns in editing the music video as well. Rhiannon was also very good at using Photoshop
this is why we used one of her Ancillary texts (magazine article) because we
thought she had the best Photoshop skills to create the best idea possible. I do believe that our video is a very
unique idea that goes well with the song we have created. Also my Magazine
advert that we choose from the group is conventional and I think it will appeal
to my target audience. Also as a group I believe our Digipak will be successful
because it is conventional as it follows the connotations of the dance genre
e.g. the images and the colour scheme are what you would expect to see in a
Dance music video.
Q1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
My
production brief was to create a music video for a choice of genre and to
create two ancillary products to promote the artist that were a Magazine advert
and a Digipak. As a group there were various songs we looked at that we could
have gone with but in the end after the research we conducted e.g. surveys and
questionnaires we decided to base our music video on the song Sun Don’t Shine
by Klangarussell. The music genre for this song is dance.
A music
video is a short film or video that is used to accompany a piece of music.
Music videos are primarily used to market and promote the sale of music
recordings however, some bands may choose to create one specifically for
artistic purposes. Although the origins of music videos date back much further
they came into prominence in the 1980’s when MTV based their format around
them. Some music videos may be without a set concept e.g. only being a filmed
version of the songs live performance. Music videos can be categorized in the
terms of the style they use, these can include:
- · Performance
- · Narrative / story
- · Mixed performance and narrative
- · Animation
Different
techniques are used throughout in the editing and sound of music videos e.g.
- · Editing to the beat of the song - When creating a music video you have to edit to the beat of the songs because all songs have different rhythms and vibes and all have different paces therefore, there always changing which means you cant have the same paced video all the way through otherwise it wouldn't work. Our example is that when we created our music video our song the Sun don't shine was always changing beat therefore, when it was a quick beat we put in a scene which was fast paced e.g. the car crash and every time it went down to a slow pace again we put a different graveyard scene.
- Split screens - A split screen is a technique that allows one actor to appear twice in a scene. When creating a music video you use split screens to make the flow of the video seem continuous so that the audience do not become bored. We used split screens in our music video an example of this is when I am at the graveyard upset and thinking about my girlfriend then all of a sudden it goes into the next shot of where i am with her chilling at her house.
- CGI / special effects - An example of CGI or a special effect is Green screen. Green screen is a large piece of material which you take a photo in front of. It is used to combine two still images or video frames together. However, we did not use Green screen in our video but we did use it in order to take an image to use in our Magazine advert and Digipak.
- Straight cuts - A straight cut is when one shot abruptly ends and another one starts. Most music videos have a lot of Straight cuts in because they are very simple to use and you go from one scene to another. Throughout our music video we used a lot of straight cuts because we had a different scene every 3 - 4 seconds and they fitted in well with what we had filmed.
- Jump cuts - Are usually the result of a error, and not a stylistic choice by the director. We used a few Jump cuts in our music video when we went from one completely different scene to another e.g. when i was Rhiannons house having an argument then it went directly to her driving her car which led to the accident occurring.
- Changes in volume of sound - The changes in volume of sound happen in a music video because the beat is there to keep the audience intrested. You cannot have the same sound all the way through because it wont appeal to the target audience. When a scene in the music video is coming to a conclusion or something bad is about to happen the sound of the song increases e.g. in our video when the crash happens this is when the song is at its loudest.
- Digetic and Non digetic sounds - A digetic sound is where you can hear where the sound is coming from within the scene e.g. if you hear a dog barking and there is a dog in the scene that is digetic sound. Non-digetic sound is when you can hear something in the scene but don't know where it is coming from. There is no Digetic or Non-digetic sound in our music video as the song is the only sound you will be able to hear.
The codes that are used in a music videos are what equipment is used e.g. Cameras, Tripod, Memory Stick and Computer. The symbolic codes of a music video are how the person is feeling and how we see that. The conventions of a music video are the ways things are done within the video, this also describes the genre of the music video. The conventions of a music video depend on the genre of the music. The general conventions are how the artist is show performing, the pace of the editing fits to the pace of the music and the dress code reflects the mood of the song. The codes and conventions of a dance music video are usually dance routines with some
narrative, normally the location is in a club e.g. in Flo Ridas song The club
can’t handle us right now which is a dance music video that is set in a club. The
videos are upbeat and fun, usually women are seen and portrayed as being half naked in the
videos e.g. in Shaggys music video It wasn’t me where there is lots of girls in Bikinis because that dress code goes with the lyrics that are sang in that song, there is normally lots of
bright colours being portrayed and also normally all the dancers where the same
costumes e.g. in Basshunters video Now your gone.
My finished
music video does challenge my music genre because not everything that i have
put in it are codes and conventions of a dance music video. In my video the actors are not wearing the same clothes due to the different genders of the
actors. When i go to the graveyard i am wearing a suit because i have just come home from work and am showing my respects. Usually if you had a male figure in a dance video wearing a suit you would expect him to be a kind of player/pimp who is surrounded by lots of girls because they think he is rich and handsome who they could be looked after by however, this isn't the case in our video as we wanted to create a scene off sadness and make the audience realise how quickly you can loose someone. Also the girl actor is not flaunting her curves everywhere and has her
clothes on therefore, is not half naked and doesn’t follow the codes and
conventions of the dance genre this is evident when we filmed the bedroom scene when Rhiannon is wearing clothes head to toe which is not the connotations of a dance video because normally you would expect to see her in her underwear. When we filmed the bedroom scene we didn't want it to come across like that we wanted to the scene to mean something to show happy times of the couple together laying and waking up side by side to show there in love.
The ways in which my music video develops the conventions of real media products are that i have expanded the narrative of the music video through there being love throughout the video. However, by having the theme of love throughout makes it even harder for the male actor because he looses the one he only really cares about which is his girlfriend. He believes it is his faulght as the last time he see her they had a massive argument which lead to her loosing concentration and having the accident. Also we expanded the narrative through the use of our ancillary products as we give of the effect that there is a DJ in our video through the use of a Dj being the centre focus on our Magazine advert to promote the song however, in the music video a DJ does not appear once. We decided not to use a DJ in the music video because this is his first song and we wanted to promote the life of our artist and what he represents therefore, we decided to use a lot of narrative in our video to promote his life.
