Planning lighting and colours

Why are lighting and colours important within a music video?

Lighting and colours are important within a music video because it relates to the generic conventions of the music video, it will show the emotions going on in the video that the artist is going through. It also tells the audience how the artist is feeling and how their being portrayed. Lighting is very important because if the artist is trying to put a point across you need to have the correct lighting otherwise the audience will be confused and not understand what is going on. The artist will connect the lighting to the certain emotions given off, the lighting will need to change throughout otherwise the video will come across as  boring to the audience.

What styles of lighting will you include and why. What effect does it create?

We are going to use low key lighting when the couple are enjoying a romantic time looking over the sights of London after they had been to the pub together to have a few drinks. The use of low key lighting enables the audience to see the wonderful sights of London with the lights on the buildings in the background this use of lighting gives off the conotations of togetherness and love. The use of  high key lighting is used when the man is visiting the graveyard of his girlfriend the high key lighting brings out the true facial expressions that the boyfriend is going through and brings out the colour of red in the flowers he is bringing to her yard the conotations of the colour red show death, love and sadness which has all happened and is clear for the audience to see.

What colours will you include and why? Effect?

How is it conventional?

Lighting and colour is conventional to our music genre because the genre of dance allways has different pace and different styles. Low key lighting would be used in a club scene with all different colours reflecting and booming off eachother this creates a chilled out club vibe where people are either raving or just having a laugh and dance with there friends. The use of high key lighting would be used when people are performing on stage to an audience which allows them to be seen clearly. This is why we have used both high and low key lighting to show the differences in the genre of dance.

How does it help to build a relationship with your target audience?

The lighting and colours build a relationship with the target audience because the lighting in each scene will predict what kind of mood and atmosphere that is going on this gives an idea to the audience of what is about to happen next. Low key lighting gives off an effect that something could happen suddenly and leaves the audience on the edge off there seat wanting to know more. High key lighting is very much different it shows the audience that the scene is generally of a happier place but sometimes sadness is brought out when high key lighting is used.

Planning artist image

Why is an artists image important within a music video?

An artists image is important within a music video because it will determine weather or not the artist is going to make a lot of sales or not. The artist will need the general public to like them if they are to succeed. If the artist has a bad image then they are likely to generate less sales because if the artist is targeting a younger audience and they are publicly branded as doing something wrong the parents of the children will not want there sons or daughters listening to that specific artist. This therefore, means it is vital the artist presents a good image of themselves and stays out of trouble and the press for the wrong reasons. Artists will want to appeal to everyone and this could be there downfall therefore, the artist needs to choose a specific audience to target itself at and keep to the conventions of that specific genre.

How is your artist going to be represented in your music video? consider costumes, hair etc

The artist is being portrayed as the man in the music video who looses his girlfriend to a car crash. He will be represented as being extremely happy and very much in love with her when he is with and doing things with her e.g. going out to dinner, to the pub and just generally chilling with her. However, he is represented completely different when shes gone he is very upset and remorseful because he believes it was his fault for the car crash happening because they had just had an argument  and he texts her and she looks at her phone which takes away her concentration which leads to the crash. He is very upset when he has to visit the graveyard when she has been buried he is brought to tears through the sheer sadness that has happened he has lost a person he thought he could see himself with for a very long time.

How is the image conventional to your music genre?

The image is conventional to our music genre because it allows the audience to relate to the artist and what he goes through in the video. The sadness he experiences relates to the dance genre of when the dancing is slow paced and prolonged and the happy times relate to when the dancing has a quick rhythm and beat. This relates to the dance genre because the speed of dance always changes and is not kept to one particular pace.

What effect does this have with creating a relationship with your text?

Our artists image relates to our target audience because they will be able to recognise straight away what genre our video is through his image. The image of the artist is unknown and is blacked out behind a set of DJ decks performing live to tons of people this is conventional to the dance genre because the crowd is going wild and they are all on there feet dancing and shouting and all having a good time. The image also shows individualarity which however, is not common to the dance genre shows he is a strong character and a great performer.

Planning cinematography

What is the purpose of cinematography?

The purpose of cinematography is to create an effect with all the different camera shots you use. Camera shots are important to include within a music video because they give off effects that may make the audience feel emotion, it can also build tension, excitement and suspense or give the feeling that something is about to happen. Cinematography is the technique of movie photography including both the shooting and development of the film.

Include still images to support your points?

What cinematography will you include and why?

In our movie we will use a range of cinematography, we will use some fast paced shots to create an effect of drama for example when the car crash happens and the girl dies. Slow paced shots will be used when filming in the graveyard to create a sense of sadness and to show how upset and how much he misses his girlfriend, we want the audience to feel his pain by doing this. The use of high angled shots and low angled shots will be used throughout as well. The high angled shot will be used when the man and his girlfriend are together outside the pub looking over the beautiful, romantic sights of London this gives off a sense that they are very happy together and are enjoying each others company all through the use of the shot. A low angled shot will be used when he is kneeling down on the grave where his girlfriend has been buried this shot is used to reflect the true feelings that he is going through and the true distraughtness will be brought out for the audience to see.

How is your cinematography conventional to your music genre?

My cinematography is conventional to my music genre because the editing goes from slow paced to high paced which you see a lot in dance music videos because the dancing always varies at one point. The dancing can be very lively and energetic but then can change suddenly to prolonged exagerated dancing which involves the slow paced editing therefore, i believe the contrast from slow to fast paced editing works well for my music video. Also the high and low shots work well because sometimes the artists in dance videos are on stage therefore, the high shot shows they have got power and shows they are the main person in the video this is what the man in our music video we created is being portrayed as.

How does it build a relationship with your target audience?

It builds a relationship with the target audience because it reels the viewer in to what is going on. The shots that we have filmed are supposed to be dramatic and leave the viewer on the edge of their seats e.g. when the car crash happens we want to leave them wanting to know weather she died or survived. Also we want to create tension when the shots are being filmed as if it is actually happening this all builds a relationship with the audience and they will hopefully find the music video interesting and explaining the story that we have created or might find it totally boring and unconventional.

Planning Setting and Iconography

What is the purpose of setting and iconography?

The purpose of setting and iconography is to create a scene that the viewer can understand and believe. The audience wants to believe whats going on in the video that's why each setting you do needs to relate back to the story your trying to tell. Iconography is also important because it is the representation of something that has generic conventions with that specific genre. The genre dance refers to Pop and R&B types of music. You can tell what genre the music video is by how the music video is represented.

Include still images to support your points?

What settings will you include and why?

We started off our music video with the setting of a graveyard, we thought it was important to film in the graveyard because in our music video the boys girlfriend dies in a car crash therefore, we wanted to show the audience how upset he is and that he feels that it was his fault she died because she was driving just after she had a massive argument with him. The setting of the graveyard represents remorse and genuine sadness the boyfriend is completely heartbroken and would do anything to get her back he is extremely upset. We used the graveyard because we thought the audience would feel a sense of sadness and to understand that he loves her ever so much.

Another setting we used was the couple experiencing fun times together. The couple were filmed walking into the pub and having a few drinks together they were having a very romantic night, the setting of the pub looking over Canary Wharf portrays a sense of love and togetherness to show how much they mean to each other. The couple kiss and are having a laugh throughout with one another.

What iconography will you include and why?

The iconography that i will use is the flowers that i am taking to my girlfriends grave, they are red we used red flowers because the red flowers connote the feeling of sadness. We want the audience to feel sad because it creates more tension to the scene. Also the phones that are used by myself and Rhiannon when we are texting we use this because that is the reason why Rhiannon has a car crash and dies because she is concentrating on the phone.

How is your setting and iconography conventional, to your music genre?

Setting and iconography are conventional to my music genre because it informs the audience of where the video is taking place and what significance it has. When the setting is in the graveyard that will inform the audience that something bad has happened and will know it is a sad time in the song because it gives off the conotations of death, sadness and grief. However, when the couple are looking over the sights of London and having a romantic time shows the audience they love each other just through the setting that they are in it also gives off that the song is now in to a more cheerful and happy part.

How does it build a relationship with your target audience?

These settings will build a relationship with the target audience because throughout our music video it shows the ups and downs that life can bring you and how quickly something can change. The man was happily in love with his girlfriend until they have an argument she looses concentration cashes her car and dies this shows something can go within a matter of seconds and the audience can relate to this because it happens in everyday life. Also the audience can relate to the happier times the couple experienced together when they were in each others company and just having a good time with one another.

Music Channels

MTV

MTV is a 24-hour general entertainment channel operated by Viacom International Media Networks Europe, available in the United Kingdom and Ireland. The channel was launched as part of MTV Networks Europe localization strategy in 1997. In its early years, MTV's main target were young adults, but today, MTV's programming is primarily targeted at teenagers in addition to young adults. MTV has a target audience of around the ages from 10-18 because MTV mostly plays chart songs. MTV has strict restrictions on censorship as well therefore, it doesn't play songs which have inappropriate language in or nudity which leads to the target audience being a low age because they do not want to upset anyone. Artists that appear on MTV on a regular basis are Rhianna, Justin Beiber, Beyonce, Katy Perry and One Direction. The channel is used as form of branding through its music channels e.g. MTV MUSIC, MTV BASE, MTV HITS AND MTV DANCE which promotes all the music that MTV play. The logo appeals to the target audience because MTV stands out however, i dont think the black in MTV does it any favours because the convention of black may make the viewer seem that they play gothic rock music which is completely the opposite to what they play. I would have thought bright colours sums up the conventions of the music MTV play.

BOX

Box is a television channel in the United Kingdom and  Ireland. The channel is one of many within the Box television network, a joint venture between channel four television corporation and Bauer media group. The channel mainly broadcasts music videos, although it also features other music-related programming from 4Music. Box plays a wide range of music and includes old school songs as well from the 80's and 90's which leads to them having and older target audience. Artists that appear on Box on a regular basis are Kylie Minogue, The Wanted, Sugar babes, SClub 7 and John Newman. The channel is used as a form of branding through the use of its website and there sister channels e.g. Magic, Kerrang and smash hits who all promote Box. The logo appeals to the target audience because Box is written different,the letter "x" has a bold outline to make the viewer think they play music which is different and x rated which will get the viewer going.

SCUZZ

Scuzz is a british music television channel owned and operated by Chart show channels. It launched on 17 April 2003 and has gone on to be the highest-rated rock TV station on UK satellite. KISS

Kiss TV is a commercial music television channel from Box television. It is based on the format of the Bauer owned London radio station Kiss 100 which started as a pirate radio station in 1985. The channels playlist predominantly consists of mainstream hip-hop, Dance and R&B. Kiss' target audience is for all ages young children up to older adults they listen in to kiss either on the way to school, on the way to work or purely in there free time. Kiss also has strict rules on censorship and will not play any videos which have inappropriate language in or nudity which leads to the target audience being a low age because they do not want to upset anyone because they know they have younger children listening in as well as adults. Artists that appear on a regular basis on kiss are Jason Derulou, Chris Brown, Rhianna, Justin Beiber and Bruno Mars. Kiss is branded through its website and from having its on radio station which is 24/7 which plays music to people tuning in. The logo appeals to the target audience because the blue coloured writing gives the audience a sense that the music they play is calm and mellow and just what you want to hear in the morning.

Vh1

VH1 is an American cable television network based in New York City. The original purpose of the channel was to build on the success of MTV by playing music videos, but targeting a slightly older demographic than its sister channel, focusing on the lighter, softer side of popular music. Although VH1 still occasionally plays music videos and the Top 20 video countdown, its more recent claim to fame has been in the area of music-related reality programming. Vh1 mainly plays chart songs which come under the genres on Hip-hop and R&B. Artists that commonly appear on Vh1 are Justin Timberlake, JAY Z, Sean Paul, Black eyed peas and Drake. Vh1 is branded through its sister channels which are Vh1 classic and Vh1 soul they promote the channel by telling there listeners to tune in to Vh1 as well. Research into chosen artist

          As a group we decided to create a music video that offered a specific purpose therefore, we
          thought  Sonnetanz was the perfect song as it is very popular with the public as it has reached                       the top 10 in 6 different countries. Sonnentanz is Klangkarussells biggest song to date.
          Klangkarussell are relatively new artists and have already become largely well known within the
          dance/house genre and therefore attracted us to choose their music because as a group we all                       like that sort of music  therefore, will lead us to understand and incorporate the conventions of                       the genre when creating our music video.

Klangkarussell are dance and electronic producers from Austria who were formed in 2011. The two  members are Tobias Rieser and Adrian Held. Their biggest hit has been "Sonnentanz" which has reached the Top 10 in 6 countries. Tobias Rieser started off as a solo artist under the name Klangkarussell. Adrian Held, produced electronic music under the artist name i herald an anagram of his real name. In 2011, the two artists joined the duo "heroes sound" together and produced their first songs together. To avoid confusion with producers they left "heroes sound" and joined up together and became klangarussell.

      Here is a table of where Sonnentanz appeared in the charts in foreign countries

      Klangkarussell are not just signed to one specific record label they are signed to three which are Vertigo Records, Capitol Records and Universal Music and and after wowing the major label with a private gig, they were signed up to create their debut album, due early next year. It is said that this will reveal the depth of the pair's influences, indirect as they are: the carefully constructed beats that hark back to Adrian's drum'n'bass background in their flawless execution (though not their tempo); the anthemic qualities of the Kalkbrenners (and even Austrian pop icon Falco), and the restless innovation of dance music's lateral thinkers like Jamie xx and Flying Lotus. Klangkarussells hit single "sonnentanz" Sun don't shine was released In June 2013 which peaked to number 3 in Austria, number 3 in Belgium, number 170 in France, number 4 in Germany, number 1 in the Netherlands and number 3 in Switzerland. The song was released in the United Kingdom on August 18, 2013 and features vocals from Will Heard. To date it has accumulated 22 million views and over 10,000 comments.

      Our research into our chosen artist shows us what music genre they come under and what music they like to sing, as a group we all decided what genre we would like and klangarussell came under that category and we thought from what we have read and heard that we would like to do our video on there hit single Sun Don't Shine.

Vox pops

As a group we decided to use Vox-Pops because we got primary research from random people so that we could get a wider range of ideas and see first hand what people would like to see in a music video. By doing the Vox-pop it has helped us to identify what target audience we should be aiming our music video at.

Evaluation

What is the purpose of a target audience?

The purpose of a target audience is who your going to aim your video at. You need a specific target audience so that you can keep to the conventions of what they expect. A target audience is a specific group of people within the target market at which a product or marketing message of a product is aimed at. If you don't  have a target audience then your video could be aimed at all ages. If your target audience is young teenagers and there is swearing in the video there parents will not want them listening to that this will decrease sales therefore, it is vital before creating your music video you know who your aiming it at because this will increase sales and your video will be viewed by more people.

·       What types of research did you carry out and why?

     We carried out primary research as we went round school and collected all the data ourselves, we interviewed all different age ranges so that we could have a point of view from everyone. We then played back what they had to say and choose from then on what we were going to do.

·       How many people did you survey and why?

We shared this questionnaire with 40 people so we could get a large sample of what people would like to see in a music video. We choose the number to be 40 because we wanted a wide range of different answers from all the different age groups we asked.

·       Were the vox pops successful and how will you with planning your music video?

The vox pops were successful because as a group we got the audiences answers from the questionaire and their points of view on camera. The audiences feedback was vital because it told us what they would like to see in a music video this overall helped us create ours because we have got a first hand opinion off the people we interviewed. Obviously we understand that not everyone's point of view is going to be the same but it is a start from what we collected.

Pick 3 different questions and discuss the results that you received. Explain how your results will assist you and your group with planning the music video?

Which is your faviourite music genre?
t
      The results we received were:

      R&B = 15%
      Rap = 10%
      Jazz = 5%
      Dance = 35%
      Pop = 25%
      Rock = 10%

Have you heard of Sonnentanz?

      Yes = 77%
No = 23%

Do you think music should be censored?

      Yes = 58%
      No = 42%

The results we received will help us plan and assisted us in planning our music video because out of the 40 people we surveyed the music genre that was liked most was dance therefore, we choose dance to be our genre that we based our music video on. Also 77% of the people we surveyed had heard of Sonnentanz we thought this was a high % of people therefore, we went with them as being the group we based our video on.

Pie Charts

We decided to create pie charts because we thought it was the best and most easiest way to present our information that we collected for the audience to understand. It also allowed us too see what people would want to see if they watched a music video. I will use these results to help us plan our music video, it will also tell us what the audience hope to see in a music video and what conventions they like. This research has helped us in choosing which age range to target for our music video and what they would like to see in it.

Questionnaire

Questionnaires are important when considering a target audience because you need to find out there opinion on what you are about to create. If you create a music video that they are not attracted to then people will not want to see it therefore, it is best to get the audiences opinion before you do anything. Questionnaires are important to our study as we can find out what people want in a music video and we can then appeal to the target audiences needs. We shared this questionnaire with 40 people so we could get a large sample of what people would like to see in a music video.
