Research and analysis of a star Dyers theory

How can a music video help to show an image of an artist?

I think Justin Bieber has reinvented his image you can tell this from analysing his videos from the start of his career up until his most recent ones. Justin Bieber was born on March 1 1994.
One of Justins first songs was Baby.  It was released as the lead single from his album My World 2.0. Ludacris who is a rapper also appeared in the song. The song was released on the 18th january 2010.
As of july 2013 it is the best selling song in US history as it is the only song to have been certified 12x platinum. The song comes under the genre Pop.

The song was a commercial success peaking at top spot in france and charting in the top ten of the UK and many other countries. In july 2010 the video became the most viewed video in YouTube history. He followed up the release of his debut album with his first headlining tour, the My world tour. Justins target audience for Baby was young teenage girls because at the time his image was a cute faced artist that had a special talenet in singing, this attracted all the younger girls into liking his music because they thought he was unbelieveable and nothing they had experienced before.

Here is a clean cut image of Justin on the front page of his song Baby. Here Justin has long wavy blonde hair and is baby faced. This is when Justin was first becoming well known as an artist.

In June 2011, Bieber was ranked #2 on the Forbes list of Best-Paid Celebrities under 30. He is the youngest star, and 1 of 7 musicians on the list, having raked in $53 million in a 12-month period. On November 1, 2011, Bieber released under the mistletoe, his second studio album. It debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200, selling 210,000 copies in its first week of its release.

After this Beibers image started to change. He was more concerned about partying and women than his career. He also changed his hairstyle to short on the sides and long spikey on top, this is completely different to the long wavy hair he had before. In late 2011, Bieber began recording his third studio album, entitled Believe. On February 22, 2012, Bieber announced via Twitter that the first single off Believe would be released in March 2012. The following week, Bieber appeared on a TV show to announce that the first single would be called "Boyfriend" and would be released on March 26, 2012. The song was co-written by Mike Posner. The song debuted at number two on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart, selling a total of 521,000 copies, the second-highest-ever debut digital sales in a week. The genre "Boyfriend" comes under is Pop Rap and R&B. Justins target audience in this video completely changes to any videos he has made before he is now targeting an older audience of elder teenagers. You can tell this through Goodwins theory of relationship beetween lyrics and visual when he says "if you were my boyfriend ill never let you" and a elder teenager appears and he is holding on to her. This leaves teenage girls  wishing it for it to be them that he is singing to .

Since then Beiber has been in abit of trouble. In March 2013, Bieber was involved in an altercation with a photographer in London which resulted in him being restrained by his own bodyguard. Bieber swore at the photographer, threatening to "fucking beat the f***" out of him. Also On August 30, 2013, a man charged at Bieber in a Toronto nightclub and placed the pop star in a chokehold. The club bouncers intervened before Bieber lost consciousness and pried the attacker away, throwing him to the floor. Justin Bieber then proceeded to kick his attacker several times in the ribs and head while the man was lying on the ground. The security personnel then had to drag a very angry Bieber away from his attacker, fearing that he would be killed.

Justin Beiber's newest song is called Heartbreaker. It was released on October 7, 2013, and produced by T-Minus, Maejor Ali, and Chief Tone. The song is the first in Bieber's series Music Mondays, where he will release a new single every week for 10 weeks until December 16, 2013. The genre for Heartbreaker is R&B and Pop, Justins target audience for this video is older teenagers starting from the age of 15. Heartbreaker has been quoted as being Justins most honest song however was not nearly as catchy as anything that he has produced before. Justins image is portrayed as being loving, emotional and vulnernable however, other people think that he has just put it on. Bieber was praised for the lyrics in the music video and for opening up even if he isn't telling the truth. The messages and values in the music video being given out are that if you happy in love you should not do anything to ruin that and if you do split up it is a hard experience and will take along time for you to get over it.

Dyers theory

In order to understand the relationship between the music industry  and its audiences, it is important to consider the roles of music stars. The term star refers to how u sell the performer to a large loyal audience. Common values of music stardom are;
  • youthfulness
  • originality
  • anger
  • success against the odds

Stars are only an image they are constructed to look like stars through media. Stars are commodities and only have a certain life span. Boybands and girlbands  have the shortest lifespan. Stars depend on a range of subsidery media e.g. magazines, tv, radio and the internet in order to construct an image for themselves which can be marketed to there target audience.

The star image is "incoherant' this is incomplete and open. Dyer says this is because it is based on two paradoxes.

Paradox 1      The star must be simultaneously ordinary and extraordinary for the consumer

Paradox 2       The star must be simultaneously present and absent for the consumer

  1. This post demonstrates a basic understanding of how a music artist has changed and developed over the years. This is because you have not analysed three music videos, instead you have included information on the artist, instead of an analysis of the music videos.

To develop this post, you need to-
    1) Analyse three music videos, that demonstrate a change in the artist. Analyse the style, conventions, target audience, micro elements, messages and values and artist representation
    2) Consider why the artist has changed and developed over the years
    3) Relate Dyer's star theory back to the points that you have made on the artist
